Practice for CAT 08 - 01

Starring from today I 'll be putting 5 practice questions each day till CAT 08.
Happy solving

Q1. When the air-conditioner is on, a typist can type X pages per hour. However, when the air-conditioner is off, she can type at 65 % of the earlier efficiency (when the air-conditioner is on). How many hours
would she take to type out 575 pages when the air-conditioner is off?
a. 375.4 X
b. 884.6 X–1
c. 36.5 X
d. 454.3 X–1

Q2. Sneha collected some money by raising subscription for opening a society. If the whole amount collected by her was 980 currency notes of 1000 denomination and each person subscribed as many rupees as twice the number of subscribers, then the amount paid by each subscriber is.
a. 500
b. 550
c. 700
d. 650

Q3. In an automated plant assembly line, the rate of rejection of components was 10% on July 1st and 6% on July 2nd. The combined rate of rejection for the two days was 9%. The ratio of production volumes on July 1st and on July 2nd is
a. 2 : 1
b. 3 : 2
c. 3 : 1
d. 2 : 5

Q4. Two guys A and B are walking down an escalator in the direction of the motion of the escalator.
A takes two steps on the same time when B takes one step. When A covers 60 steps he gets out of the escalator while B takes 40 steps to get out of the escalator. Find the number of steps in the escalator when it is stationary?
a. 80
b. 90
c. 120
d. 150

Q5. Honey and water are mixed in a vessel X in the proportion of 5 : 3 and in vessel Y in the proportion of 7 : 5. In what proportion should quantities be taken from the two vessels so as to form a mixture in which honey and water will be in the proportion of 8 : 3?
a. 34 : 58
b. 49 : 69
c. 38 : 27
d. 31:72

Q1. When the air-conditioner

Q1. When the air-conditioner is on, a typist can type X pages per hour. However, when the air-conditioner is off, she can type at 65 % of the earlier efficiency (when the air-conditioner is on). How many hours
would she take to type out 575 pages when the air-conditioner is off?
a. 375.4 X
b. 884.6 X–1
c. 36.5 X
d. 454.3 X–1

here for 0.65X page neee 1 hour

so 575pages for?

575/(0.65X)=884.6X-1

Q1. When the air-conditioner

Q1. When the air-conditioner is on, a typist can type X pages per hour. However, when the air-conditioner is off, she can type at 65 % of the earlier efficiency (when the air-conditioner is on). How many hours
would she take to type out 575 pages when the air-conditioner is off?
a. 375.4 X
b. 884.6 X–1
c. 36.5 X
d. 454.3 X–1

for 0.65X page required 1 hr

so for 575 need 575/(0.65x)=884.6X-1

Q3. In an automated plant

Q3. In an automated plant assembly line, the rate of rejection of components was 10% on July 1st and 6% on July 2nd. The combined rate of rejection for the two days was 9%. The ratio of production volumes on July 1st and on July 2nd is
a. 2 : 1
b. 3 : 2
c. 3 : 1
d. 2 : 5

if we assume production on july 1=X and july 2 =Y

then (0.10X+0.06Y)/(x+y)=0.09

so final ans (x/y)=(3:1)

Q2. Sneha collected some

Q2. Sneha collected some money by raising subscription for opening a society. If the whole amount collected by her was 980 currency notes of 1000 denomination and each person subscribed as many rupees as twice the number of subscribers, then the amount paid by each subscriber is.
a. 500
b. 550
c. 700
d. 650

here ans is simple

2X^2=980*1000

so ans is 700

a. 34 : 58
b. 49 : 69

Q4. Two guys A and B are

Q4. Two guys A and B are walking down an escalator in the direction of the motion of the escalator.
A takes two steps on the same time when B takes one step. When A covers 60 steps he gets out of the escalator while B takes 40 steps to get out of the escalator. Find the number of steps in the escalator when it is stationary?
a. 80
b. 90
c. 120
d. 150

i think LCM of 60 and 40 is 120

so ans is 120

How can i attach my sig?

Hi, could anyone tell me how can i attach my signatrure? Is this option not availiable for newbies? Thanks:)

Question 5 is wrong

ratios of both the mixtures are lower than the ratio of the final mixture.
Hense no solution!

RE : Two guys A and B are

hi jigar
i dont think that it is the right approach,
answer is correct but in some cases it may give a wrong answer

it should be
------------------

lets consider :
A takes 2 steps in 1 min
&
B takes 1 step in 1min
&
Escalator itself moves ' x ' steps in 1 min

given
---------

if A takes 60 steps ----------) takes 30 mins

ie. escalator takes 30x steps

total stes for A == 60 + 30x

SIMILARLY

if B takes 40 steps ------------) takes 40 mins

ie. escalator takes 40x steps

total steps for B == 40 + 40x

NOW

---------

for both to finish the escalator no. of steps for both shud be same

therefore

60 + 30x = 40 + 40x

==) x = 2

so, no. of steps taken by escalator in 1 min = 2

therefore

total steps in stationary escalator will be the total steps for either A or B to come down

ie. TOTAL STEPS = 60 + 30 *2 OR 40 + 40*2

==) 120 steps
