Wheel Question

The diameters of the front wheel and back wheel of a vehicle are 45 cm and 90 cm respectively.

Q1. What is the difference between the number of revolutions made by each of the wheels to cover a distance of 2.2 km(rounded off to the nearest integer)?

a. 556               b. 778               c. 389                   d. 584

Q2. What distance would be covered by the vehicle if the back wheel were to make as many revolutions as the front wheel would make in covering 6.6 km?

a. 3.3km             b. 11.4km             c. 8.25km                d. 13.2 km

Solution To Question 1

Problem:

The diameters of the front wheel and back wheel of a vehicle are 45 cm and 90 cm respectively.

Q1. What is the difference between the number of revolutions made by each of the wheels to cover a distance of 2.2 km(rounded off to the nearest integer)?

a. 556               b. 778               c. 389                   d. 584

Solution:

R = 90/2 and r = 45/2

Distance travelled in one revolution for any wheel equals the circumference [2(pi)(radius)] and so, for the front and the back wheels, the distances covered in one revolution are: 45(pi) and 90(pi) cms respectively.

So, when each of them have covered 2.2 kms  = 2200 mts = 220000 cms, the number of revolutions made by each is equal to [220000/45(pi)]  = 1555 (approximately) and [220000/90(pi)]  = 777 (approximately) respectively.

So, the difference in the number of revolutions is approximately equal to 1555 - 777 = 778.

Thank You.

Solution To Question 2

Problem:

The diameters of the front wheel and back wheel of a vehicle are 45 cm and 90 cm respectively.

Q2. What distance would be covered by the vehicle if the back wheel were to make as many revolutions as the front wheel would make in covering 6.6 km?

a. 3.3km             b. 11.4km             c. 8.25km                d. 13.2 km

Solution:

R = 90/2 and r = 45/2

Distance travelled in one revolution for the front wheel equals the circumference = 45(pi)

So, when each of them have covered 6.6 kms  = 6600 mts = 660000 cms, the number of revolutions made by each is equal to [660000/45(pi)]  = 4666 (approximately)

Now, when the back wheel completes one revolution, it covers 90(pi) cms

So, when it completes 4666 revolutions, it will cover: 90(pi)(4666) cms = 1319811 cms = 13.2 kms (approximately)

Thank You.
