Fiction Books

All the CAT takers know that all the 3 sections will be of equal marks and also that we need to cross the cut-off in all these three section but many of us give undue importance to quants. Those who are good at quants ,enjoy doing that(especially the engineer community) ,which also give them confidence. And those who are weak at quant works on it so that they gain confidence in it.
English is also very important. Here I am starting a thread to post the fiction and nonfiction book which you have read and you think its english is worth reading. Although I usually read non-fiction books but I think reading fiction will be more useful to us at this point of time .
Here are few books I am mentioning-

  1. Kite Runner-Khaled Hosseini
  2. The Class- Erich Segal

Well Said

Yes even I prefer doing Quants/DI to VA. But I have realised that there is no point in doing well in only QA/DI because one has to clear the cut-off in VA as well.
Right now I am reading "Midnight's Children" by Salman Rushdie. Its a very good book as the writing style and vocabulary used is similar to CAT passages.

RE

I am also attacked by this trauma of crossing the bar of V.A. cutoff.
Obviously after sem I will put much effort on English section. If u can manage to get even 99%tile+ in quant or DI but wd poor marks
in V.A. section the result at d last time will offer you a big ZERO so far as IIMs are concerned.Good thread...Keep on posting regarding V.A. section to so that we can kill the verbal monster in the main paper and come out wd a big smile..

Thank you.

Good Tip:

I got this grammar tip while browsing, thought of sharing it.

Never use for+verb+ing to express the purpose of the verb.
Example: He went to the store for buying milk and bread.
Very common mistake.
Right sentence is: He went to the store to buy milk and bread.

Nice post!!! If you see the

Nice post!!!

If you see the cut off pattern of VA for last 2-3 years then it was never more than 10-15% of the total mark for all the IIMs (except IIMA which has 25% cutoff for all the section)

Last Year I know one person getting calls from NITIE and SP Jain with only 8 marks in English(no call from MDI though). . So clearing the cut off is not that difficult if you restrict your self in attempting very few questions . . I am not that good in English and quite comprehensive about clearing the cutoffs. . and now after preparing for all most 4-5 mnths I am a bit confident about Reading comprehension and Jumbled paragraph. .

My area of preferences
1. Reading Comprehension
2. Jumbled Paragraph
3. Logical reasoning
4. Word based questions

Questions frm area which I prefer to ignore
1. Grammar
2. Find the error in a sentence

I guess you can be assured to get at least (30-40)% questions from RC and few more from LR/JP/. . . So first think about the areas where you are comfortable at and then prepare according. .

And do attempt at least 2-3 RCs on each alternate day. .It helps immensely in enhancing your speed and accuracy.

Re: Nice post!!!

If you are now confident in RC and parajumble the you can definitely help us.Actually i find problem in both:
 1) RC:- Although I don't generally feel problem in understanding them and even my reading speed is ok.But once I start up with the question I end up with very bad accuracy.

Result:Very few correct answers

2) Parajumble:-Once I start ,I think in mind that I have to read them carefully, but looking at all the options I totally mess up with them, in confusion either I end up marking any of the options or just skip the question.

If you can give any advice through your experience to bulid up that,it will be of great help.

Both of them need a lot of

Both of them need a lot of practice

Diff ppl approach RC in different ways so something which suits me might not be the best choice for you. . so try different RCs in different approach and stick to one approach for some time (say 10-15 days and 30-40 RCs). .see if you are finding one particular method very convenient for you. .

I first give a glance to the first/second paragraph of each RC and then try to understand the questions w/o looking into the options. . I spend almost 60-120 seconds on this. .after that I read the passage in my normal speed and try to make out each and every piece of idea/thoughts/information/opinion given in the passage. . I never hesitate in spending more time in RCs and getting all the attempts correct. .

I know if I can mark 6-7 questions correctly out of 9-10 attempts in 25-30 minutes then I am through the cutoff. . So its like giving more time and having patience instead of hastening and being prone to err.

Re:Both of them need a lot of

I think even I should try this one.Instead of trying to attempt more number of questions,I should try to attempt more accurate(correct) question .
So my motto for RC from the next time will be
"No hue and cry,just chill".

I hope it will help.I will try this today itself.
Thanks

Hellow folks, RC   I tried

Hellow folks,

RC

I tried all kind of options for RC.The last strategy worked for me....
When I start RC try to understand in deep the 1st paragraph. Then increase my speed in the onwards paragraph & maintain it 15-25% xtra than my CZS & in the last paragraph I push the break & try to maintain my CZS over hr.Now when i nevigate thru the whole passage keepin my eye on the change of direction of the passage.B4 of it I check wat kind of qs I have to face.I keep 30 seconds for it.
One IIM fellow told dont think too much about RC.It is just cheating every infomation is dr and u have to just find it out.If u are a good cheater then u can get well marks regrding RC
One thing u may try.Try to judge ur comfort zone.Attempt 3 RCs from different zones.Try it for three times in back to back three days. Then by calculation u can get ur comfort zone level.Where u r comfort do practise dr for 5-7 days and see whther ur accuracy level has increased or nt.Dn move on to d next zone.I am pretty sure here after attempting the qs u wud definately get good result. Then follow the above rules here also.

Happy RCing...
