How to Start? What to say? What if you read well, honed your conversation skills but still you get across a topic which you are not comfortable with.

Starting: Sometimes we barely mumble while starting the GD. We are at loss of words on how to start. A typical example is “Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening to all of you (maintain eye contact with all)”. I would like start/ (I would like to go first) on the discussion of this topic. According to me……….

Discussion on a topic, which you are not comfortable with. This can be classified in three types:

1.      You don’t have substantial knowledge: Be the first one to go. Share your views in a confident manner, maintain your composure. Stress out the point you think is important, don’t go over enthusiastic and repeat your points - it’s a group discussion and you are a part of that group so don’t waste group’s time by increasing your repetitive air time. Then follow part 2

2.      The topic is such unique or weird: Try with suggesting your view. Agree or disagree with other(not too harsh). Use your imagination if required. Then follow part 2.

3.      You are absolutely blank: It may happen for some phrase or topic you have absolutely no idea about. Wait; don’t go first in case you are thinking something you have gone ahead with that. Finally, the second person who knows about the topic proves you wrong; it will make you a fool in front of everybody and will dent your confidence. Once you have understood from other people views go about it as usual.
