I think that the given problem posted is wrong.

In the first line, it should have been

111…………..1 - 222……………..2  = ?
                  (2n times)                   (n times)

and then you can put values of n and check for the correct answer.

Example:

Put n = 1 and you will get: 11 - 2 = 9 = (3)2

Put n = 2 and you will get: 1111 - 22 = 1089 = (33)2

Put n = 3 and you will get: 111111 - 222 = 110889 = (333)2

Now, we can clearly see that option (b) is the correct answer.
